I want to explore and illustrate the invisble details and negative space of tradtional humble gestures, such as handshake, bowing, and noding.
What role does movement play in your own life or communities that you are part of?
Movement reflects who I am and what I have been through. I traveled between my home country China and the US for the past ten years, and all the meaningful gestures I have done communicate not only where I am right now but also what I am away from.
What movement, practice, tradition, ritual, or performance resonates with you and why?
Every bow, every handshake, and every friendly smile represent the hospitality culture of my hometown. I am raised to be respectful to people just as they will be my dearest friend and mentor. They become the invisible bridge connecting me and others.
What are the historical and cultural contexts of your chosen movement?
The humble gestures of my culture can be traced back to Confucius. His ideology profoundly influenced every generation of Chinese people.
How might this practice be expressed through motion capture?
Through motion capture and virtual character development, I want to capture the negative space and the movement of some traditional gesture, just like considering the blank space to compensate for the main subject in painting and sculpture.
